These concerns have been submitted to the Standing Committee on Social Policy.

The major concern is the fact that 13,400 Ontarians are waiting for residential services, day supports, and services including respite services. This Bill does not guarantee that the rights of these citizens will be met any time soon. Prioritization and waiting lists are, in fact, enshrined within the legislation.

To view Bill 77 http://www.ontla.on.ca/web/bills/bills_detail.do?locale=en&BillID=2018

OM 21 Response to Bill 77

Opportunities Mississauga for 21+

Remarks to the Standing Committee on Social Policy, Queens Park
August 5, 2008

Ron Pruessen:
On behalf of Opportunities Mississauga for 21+, we appreciate this invitation to speak to your committee. Our grassroots organization is 8 years old and represents an ever-increasing number of Mississauga families – 150 families by this point. We are the mothers, fathers, siblings, and grandparents of young and middle aged adults with developmental disabilities. In my own case, I am the father of a 31-year old daughter – Caroline – who is both physically handicapped and intellectually disabled.

Our identity as family members is important. Because of who we are, we have profound experience with developmental disabilities: between us, our 150 families have more than 6000 years of experience dealing with people with developmental disabilities. Yes: 6000 years of 24/7 experience. This gives us a special vantage point from which to consider Bill 77 and we have given the bill our close attention.

Our interest is an extension of our serious engagement with the entire “transformation of services” effort. The Honourable Sandra Pupatello, then Minister of Community and Social Services, announced the “study and review” process that has helped to generate Bill 77 at our Annual General Meeting in 2004. We then participated extensively in the public forums that led to the publication of the Ministry’s “Opportunities and Action” document. Indeed, we met several times with previous Parliamentary Assistant Ernie Parsons as that study was being prepared and met, as well, with the Honourable Madeleine Meilleur.

What does our personal experience and our organizational engagement lead us to see?

We want to emphasize two components of our thinking here: On one hand, praise and appreciation; on the other hand, the way in which our positive feelings are being restrained by concerns and doubts.

Positive feelings deserve initial emphasis. Our families were struggling with the severe shortcomings of Ontario’s programs for adults with developmental disabilities before the present government was elected. We know – we really know – how bad the problems were in the 1980s and 1990s. We remember all too well how carefully gathered evidence and clearly reasoned pleas for attention to long-neglected needs were met with callous indifference or empty words. To its great credit, this government has admirably replaced closed doors with open ones and has been gradually convincing many of our members that its heart is genuinely in the right place. Bill 77 suggests the possibility that more recently minted words do not have to simply float away on the wind. We extend our heartfelt thanks for this and say “Well done – so far.”

The “so far” in this praise brings us to the “concerns and doubts” that complicate our appreciation. As we look at Bill 77, our members are quite worried about what we see as elements of vagueness and incompleteness.

We would highlight two examples that are particularly important to us:

Barb Ashcroft:
First, we strongly believe that a milestone piece of legislation like this should include a preamble that clearly identifies the rights of Ontario citizens with developmental disabilities.

My name is Barb Ashcroft and as a member of the Retired Teachers of Ontario (District 39 Peel) Political Action Committee I am here to support OM 21. Our organization is advocating on behalf of seniors and aging parents who find themselves in great stress without sufficient support for residential and respite services for their adult children with developmental disabilities. The adult children of these parents are citizens – no one in this government would deny that – and a bill that seeks to initiate more serious action addressing the problems of this especially vulnerable group of citizens should clearly declare that they are entitled to minimum standards of care and support in key areas. Through the Education Act these young people were entitled to programs and services without prioritization and waiting lists. We wonder why this kind of entitlement no longer exists after age 21 when the individual's disability continues. Given the needs and vulnerabilities of this group Ontario citizens, their right to things like appropriate housing supports should be declared.

Without an explicit recognition of rights, Bill 77 would lack an appropriate grounding – as well as the standards against which progress can be measured.

Ron Pruessen:
Our organization’s second concern with Bill 77 is the absence of budget information – the absence even of words about more abstract budget targets or a projected trajectory for improvements. Problems that have been profoundly neglected for decades cannot be solved without the provision of significant new resources: our 150 families know that – as do thousands of other families like ours across this province.

We would frankly have preferred to have Bill 77 accompanied by budget information. If the budget details are going to come later, as seems to be the case, we have no choice but to be patient – as we have been patient so many times before. But you need to be aware of the fact that we will be watching carefully to see what substantive life will be breathed into this bill. You have brought us to a moment where we now expect meaningful, real progress on the road you have encouraged us to chart with you…meaningful, real progress, in particular, on matters like respite and residential supports for the thousands of families who did not institutionalize children 20, 30, or 40 years ago…the thousands of aging families struggling with the strains and even health problems produced by decades of exceptional responsibilities.
Sheila Swinton:I’d like to help you understand why respite and residential supports and funding are so important to the caregivers. In many of our cases our loved ones are stronger and more energetic than ourselves. Due to the nature of behavioural variances that can and do result in crisis situations we are often left physically and mentally drained. Also due to the aging process of ourselves we have less physical energy to deal with the physical demands required to care for our family members. Often there is a very despairing and emotional strain as well from being constantly trapped because we cannot leave them unattended. Our every move has to be carefully planned and calculated in advance. For example, to do something as simple as step out to the store briefly. And then, of course, having to pay someone just to do that. Also due to our aging it is a concern who will take care of all these responsibilities when we can no longer do it, and we worry about when we are no longer here at all. We desperately need the services related to respite and residential support. We already have in place an assessment process regarding all this, and direct funding or service funding models are already in place, so we don’t need to start over again regarding these areas, but we need to expand funding so that newrespite and residential facilities can be created. These are our main concerns.

Ron Pruessen:
It is a wonderful thing that you have worked with families and agencies to chart a road forward – but it is an achievement that now carries serious responsibilities with it. Do not imagine that the admiration that has been generated by the “transformation” effort will either linger or quietly fade away if words do not translate into deeds. There will almost surely be a whirlwind of disappointment and anger if the government sees the essentially preparatory provisions of Bill 77 as sufficient – or if the government believes the template or the “shell” conceptualized in this bill will allow the “transformation” effort to quietly come to rest on a backburner. Do not imagine, either, that tiny funding increases will allow achievement of a necessarily ambitious vision – especially if minimalist new funding is dedicated primarily to administrative procedures, application centers, and the like. If this happens, then the template or “shell” that Bill 77 is designed to create will be seen as the set-up for a “shell game” – and “shell game” will be a fair and loudly proclaimed label.

To conclude: We urge the government to continue as it has begun – to continue boldly as it has admirably begun. Take the splendid impulse to transform the services provided to Ontario citizens whose needs and vulnerabilities have been neglected for decades and match fine words with powerful actions.

For our part, we will continue to work and to offer praise if you also continue. Families like ours are as ready as we have always been to help devise quality programs that are efficient and cost-effective. We are anxious, in fact, to pair community energies and resources with government resources to create services and opportunities that neither of us could create on our own. (Opportunities Mississauga, for example, has designed a transitional respite and residential program that would allow a group of 12 adults with developmental disabilities to receive significantly improved services with the same dollars that would ordinarily support 4.) We do not expect you to do this alone, in other words – indeed, we do not want you to do this alone – but you must be prepared to go beyond words and administrative changes if partnerships are to succeed in solving very serious problems. What a wonderful achievement it would be to solve those problems. What a terrible failure it will be if you do not now move across the threshold on which you are poised.

RTO District 39 Peel, Response to Bill 77

Bill 77 Written Submission
To the Standing Committee on Social Policy
From The Retired Teachers of Ontario, District 39, Peel

We are an organization of 2,673 retired teachers (District 39) in Peel Region.

Our organization is advocating on behalf of seniors – aging parents who find themselves in great stress without sufficient support for residential and respite services for their adult children with developmental disabilities. As our members age, they are becoming physically and mentally drained as they try to cope, without adequate support, with the daily physical demands and responsibilities of care giving for their adult children with developmental disabilities. Some have given up submitting requests for a community residential home, as it appears that waiting lists have almost become meaningless as all the spaces go directly to those in crisis situations – that is, to those whose parents have recently died.

We are also advocating on behalf of our former students who are now post 21 years-of- age, and in desperate need of quality day programs for continued learning and development.

We, as former educators, have been designing curricula and working for years to assist and prepare these students for supported or independent community living. We are dismayed that these young adults who have been part of an inclusive school system, partaking in meaningful educational programs, challenging activities and supported work experience, are now for the most part sitting at home. Our members tell us that they have a very difficult time explaining to their young adult children with developmental disabilities why the school bus no longer picks them up. Their adult children are anxious to continue their involvement and inclusion in daily community and lifelong learning programs. We acknowledge the positive intent of the Passport Funding initiative, but we understand that "90% of the applications that were submitted were refused or turned down." (Debates, Hansard 2008-05-26)

With Respect to Bill 77

We strongly believe that a milestone piece of legislation like this should include a preamble that clearly identifies the rights of Ontario citizens with developmental disabilities. Through the Education Act these young people were entitled to programs and services without prioritization and waiting lists. We wonder why this entitlement no longer exists after age 21 when the individual's disability continues.

We are concerned that enshrining the terms "prioritization" and "waiting lists" within the legislation will only perpetuate more of the same lack of service and always be available as an excuse for no provision of supports due to lack of funding. These terms should not be part of any legislation that has at its base a primary goal of "the full inclusion of Ontarians with a development disability in all aspects of society." (Consultations Regarding the Transformation of Developmental Services of 2006 )

We would like to see functional literacy and continuing education courses be added to the list of services in Bill 77 so that those young adults who have the potential may continue their lifelong learning.

A person-directed plan developed with the support of a facilitator should be the main focal point for any service profile, and should be a part of this Bill. We are fearful that the Application Centers may become over-focused on the use of assessments for exclusion of service as opposed to being supportive to the development of person-directed planning.

We urge the Ministry of Community and Social Services to co-operate with the Ministry of Education. The schools have a wealth of assessment information regarding those students who are leaving at age 21. Transition plans are already required by the Education Act. Sharing these assessments and plans will avoid further duplication of paper and time, and, thus, unnecessary use of tax-payers' dollars.

We applaud the Liberal government for the directions and recommendations set forth in the Consultations Regarding the Transformation of Developmental Services of 2006 and for the promise that direct funding holds for families of adult children with developmental disabilities. On the other hand, we wonder how long it will take before these recommendations become a reality. As a province we must act now. According to the Provincial Network on Developmental Services there are 13,400 Ontarians waiting for residential services, day supports and services, including respite services. This is inexcusable. How did the province ever let this get out of control? Institutions have been closing over the past 30 years. Schools have been including students with developmental disabilities since 1982. Was there no one in the planning department to project and budget for future community services? Did no government care enough to commit the funds to continue the required services that a community-based inclusion philosophy requires? Where, in the Ontario government, are the advocates for this vulnerable population? This gap in service must be closed. We can all do better than this. When we are truly committed to ensuring the rights of those with disabilities, we will always find creative ways to make it happen.

As a province we must move forward to guarantee the rights of all citizens especially those who are most vulnerable. When we make the community a better place for those with special needs, we enrich all our lives. No family is ever exempt from disability.

Submitted by:
Barbara Ashcroft, Political Action Committee, RTO/ERO District 39, Peel, (author), and
Jim Challis, Political Action Committee, RTO/ERO District 39, Peel, (chair).
August 11, 2008

Be Here Now

"Life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quickly you hardly catch it going." -- Tennessee Williams

Many people live their whole lives lost in thoughts of the past and the future. Yet, we only truly live life when we are present to the moment. And being present means being fully conscious of what's going on so we can participate fully and appropriately in the opportunities that present themselves. There is value in reliving our experiences when we can learn from such reflection. However, there's no need to probe into the past to unearth old experiences for healing. Life does a marvellous job of bringing circumstances to us now that support us in healing old wounds. And so we can be assured that we always gain by opening to the possibilities inherent in every 'now' moment. We lose the power of the moment because we're so rarely in it. We're reliving the past or speculating about the future. We continue to believe that tomorrow's the day when I'll be more capable, more wealthy, more fit and more loving. Yet, intuition, creativity, connection, soul and inspiration are available only in the present moment. When you find yourself thinking of the future or the past, bring your awareness into the present. That is how important you are!

When you are present, when your attention is fully and intensely in the Now, Being can be felt, but it can never be understood mentally. To regain awareness of Being and to abide in that state of “feeling-realization” is enlightenment.

There’s no need to seek out some other place or some other condition or situation and then do it there. Do it right here and now. Wherever you are is the place for surrender. Whatever the situation you’re in, you can say “yes” to what is, and that is then the basis for all further action.

To be identified with your mind is to be trapped in time—the compulsion to live almost exclusively through memory and anticipation. This creates an endless preoccupation with past and future and an unwillingness to honor and acknowledge the present moment and allow it to be. The compulsion arises because the past gives you an identity and the future holds the promise of salvation, of fulfillment in whatever form. Both are illusions.

Always say ‘yes’ to the present moment. What could be more futile, more insane, than to create inner resistance to something that already is? What could be more insane than to oppose life itself, which is now and always now? Surrender to what is. Say ‘yes’ to life—and see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you.

Eckhart Tolle has written The Power of Now, A New Earth and Stillness Speaks

To order from Amazon http://tinyurl.com/ywwhwt

Higher Awareness

Sign up for free inspirational messages from Higher Awareness
http://tinyurl.com/2nu008

Higher Awareness programs help you to know & grow yourself with your own personal development plan. Do you take time to nourish your physical and spiritual needs? If you can answer "yes" to these questions, then I know that you value and appreciate YOU just as you are. So often, however, as women, we spend most of our lives trying to please everyone else, making sure that all of their needs are met before our own. Do you even know what your own needs are? Sometimes it takes a rather drastic wake-up call, such as a personal illness, an injury or an emotional breakdown for us to even allow ourselves the right to do something special that feeds our own soul.

Why is it so hard for some of us to realize that unless we fill our own tanks first, we will not have any energy or internal resources to offer to others? Even on an airplane the message is for the adult to put on her own oxygen mask first before assisting others.
I can't tell you how many times I have heard women tell me that they feel guilty about spending time or money on some personal fitness or downtime activities for themselves. What good are we to others if we don't look after ourselves?

Do you hold yourself to higher standards than you expect from others? Are you your own worst critic? If you had a friend who talked to you like you sometimes talk to yourself, would you continue to hang around that person? Give yourself a break. Get off that pedestal of perfection. We need to stop trying to be the general managers of the Universe and just accept ourselves as part of the human race with all our frailties and imperfections. Adopt the concept of "good enough". Learn to accept yourself just as you are right now in whatever circumstances you might find yourself. Relax and be kind to yourself.

We must begin to value and appreciate ourselves. When we begin to love and accept ourselves, we will start to take better physical care of ourselves, and make sure that we have time to nourish our souls. In addition, the more self appreciation we have, the more we will become aware when others are taking advantage of our good will or are treating us with disrespect. When we truly value ourselves, we will not tolerate any physical or emotional abuse from any other human being, child, spouse, friend or family member. We teach others how to treat us. If we have little respect for ourselves, others will act likewise. When we deny our magnificence, we give others permission to do the same. No one can make you feel inferior without your permission. Making yourself a priority is not a sin! It’s an absolute must if you ever hope to live out your own passion and purpose in life and give back to others.

We cannot be a source of strength unless we nurture our own strength.
M. There are a few spaces available.

To Register: 905 814-6434 barb@barbashcroft.com

Winter/Spring Seminars

Get your life in focus after all the Holiday bustle and blur.

EVENTS

Location: Central Mississauga

Discover Your True Passions-Small group $75.00 each (includes materials)
Jack Canfield's Testimonial

Saturday mornings 9:30-12:30
January 12
February 9

Evenings 7:00-10:00
Thursday January 17
Thursday February 21

Private session $125.00
Special rates for your group, club or association.

Journey to Joy Six Session Program-weekly $295.00

Tuesday Evenings 7:00-9:30
January 8-February 12
April 1-May 6

NEW The Journey Continues-Keeping Your Spirit Alive Monthly Series $35.00 each
These sessions are designed for those who have already taken any of the Journey to Joy Seminars. Are you looking to the future with hope and optimism or are you stuck in a rut focusing on long past hurtful events? No one can change the past for anyone. We all have some past hurts and resentments, but to constantly give attention to these events is like continually picking on a scab and hoping it will heal. We all need to have a time of mourning for the past, but dwelling on guilt, resentment, anger, and revenge hurts no one but ourselves. When we hold on tight to these thoughts, we become immobilized, and our true beautiful selves get buried. We waste the precious "now" and dash any hopes for a joyful future.

Let this New Year be one of hope, joy, peace and contentment for all. Let your heart be filled with gratitude for this moment right now. See the natural beauty of nature around you; feel the unconditional love of little children and animals; be thankful for a few good loyal friends; count your small blessings; make a commitment to yourself to live your best life now; follow your heart and start living your passions. The time is RIGHT NOW.
Renew your spirit and start the New Year with a clear focus for living your best life.

Building Your Child's Self Esteem

Teach your children how to find joy in their small accomplishments. It is not external things or goods that bring self satisfaction or contribute to a child's self image. It is the actual completion of a task, activity or goal. We all know how good we feel when we have successfully completed a task. The more successful tasks or activities that children successfully complete, whether they be academic or extracurricular, the better they will feel about themselves, and it is this sense of self-confidence that they will take with them into adulthood. Give honest encouragement and praise, but only where it is due. Make sure the task is age-appropriate and reasonably within their capability. Support them with encouragement, but teach them persistence and follow through. Give them an example of a task that you have worked through and successfully completed. Make sure you tell them about your setbacks and trials and errors. They need to know that making mistakes is just part of the learning process. Quality tasks take time and effort. Children need to know this in our instant-on rush, rush culture. Start a record of all their ongoing successes. When they feel insecure or start to doubt their ability, bring out the success book. We all need to review our accomplishments once in a while.

Christmas Joy

The joy that you give to others is the joy that comes back to you.

Joy to the World!! This is the season of joy, isn't it? Maintaining a spirit of joy in crowded shopping malls, however, may be a little impossible. The Christmas season should be one of joy, but take a quick reading on your joy meter and see how joyful you feel rushing about, adding more events to your already crowded daily schedule and worrying if you will ever be able to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list.
Stop and reflect for a minute. What is it that truly brings you joy? Is it the expensive gifts, or is it being with the people you love and care about? Slowing down and sharing a community or family meal, singing familiar carols together, and sharing and listening to each others' stories are the true essence of Christmas joy. We all are each others' gifts. What personal gifts and talents do you have to bring to others? Not all people have the perfect family with the perfect decorations and the perfect gifts. Many folks are hurting from broken relationships, or the loss of a loved one. Others may feel lonely as their loved ones may be far away and not able to join them at this special time. Christmas joy is about the celebration of people. Let us celebrate each others' gifts at this wonderful time and rejoice in our humanity. Let us bring peace, love and joy to those who are waiting for our call. The gift of yourself to others is priceless!

For Parents

The pressure is on. Our children are bombarded with daily advertisements of the latest, coolest toy and electronic games. It is difficult to hold the line when you are faced with such enticing and appealing ads. Buying what you can afford and what you feel your children will benefit from the most must be your priority. Any one of us could be called upon to care for an older parent, an accident victim of any age, or a dear friend recently diagnosed with a degenerative or terminal disease. We never know when this call may come. Our first response may be one of fear. Most of us do not have medical backgrounds and may panic at the thought of dealing with the unknown. We might also wonder how we will manage to do this with our already over-scheduled daily routine. We may even find ourselves sandwiched between the needs of our aging parents and the ongoing needs of our young children. Then, added to the mix are the daily demands of our workplace.

We may begin to feel overwhelmed at just the thought of it of it all. Some folks might even be tempted to opt out, throw their hands in the air and run, claiming a lack of knowledge and skills. But let me tell you from personal experience that when the will to see this through is there, the way will be shown. Just get in there and start. It is amazing to see how we are given the strength and skills to cope in crises situations. Sometimes when I look back at those times when I got the call to be there 24/7 for my father when he was dying of cancer, for my mother when she suffered a massive stroke and lived nine years with her paralysis and for my husband when he required fulltime in home oxygen for his pulmonary fibrosis, before his transfer to continuing care, I really wonder how I got through it all. But I would never think of changing a minute of it.

So how did I do it?

Get as much knowledge as you can about the prevailing illness or situation. Ask, ask, ask. You must find out what medical, community resources and specific agencies can help you with the understanding of the disease and the organization of the care giving. Find support groups who have already been there and who can give you ideas, comfort and management tips. Do your research.

Set up a binder with all your information, including all medical and home care support names and numbers. Prepare and make photocopies of all medications, and dosages. Take this binder with you to every medical meeting and make a duplicate to have immediately available for paramedics for 911 emergency calls. This way you are not so frazzled when these wonderful medical people ask you all for all the info they need in the midst of your emergency. This binder is also helpful for any homecare staff. Keep a section for ongoing observations and questions. This saves time, helps everyone and gives you a sense of security.

Call in the reinforcements. I found that most people are more than willing to help if they know exactly how they can help. Make a list of several tasks that you do for your loved one. There may be one or two items that other neighbours, friends or family members would be willing to pick up even on an occasional basis if they knew exactly what to do. When we involve the whole family or neighbourhood community in the act of caring for others, everyone shares the responsibility, and everyone wins. The main caregiver feels supported and the wonderful messages that we are sending to our children will always be with them. Children remember our actions more than our words. When children see the love, respect, and support that we give to others with disabilities, the more likely they are to do the same for us in our hour of need.

If your loved one is in a hospital or other institutional setting, try to create as much of a home-like environment as possible. It’s amazing what comfort a few familiar photographs or sentimental objects can bring to another. Any time we must leave a loved one in an institutional setting, we must become their on-site advocate. Being clearly visible to staff and getting to know those who provide the front line care in nursing homes and hospitals can only benefit our loved one. Teamwork and co-operation on behalf of our family member or friend is the only way to ensure quality care.

Stay focused on your loved one’s abilities. What activities or tasks can they still do? If we always focus on another’s disability, we begin to look past their actual current abilities and we may contribute to their depression. Staying positive for another amidst their difficulties is a must. We always have a choice when it comes to attitude. Even a bed-ridden person may still be able to perform one or two independent tasks that maintain his sense of dignity. We need to support others to find ways to help to keep as much independent activity and social interaction going as possible. What are their affective needs? It is often the fulfillment of these needs that gives one the will to live.

Most importantly, take time for yourself. It is only when we put fuel in our tanks that we can give our best to others. This is not a selfish act, but a necessity for both you and your loved one. Just a one week break with a change of scenery will give you that boost you need to continue on. You must have this respite in order to stay emotionally and physically strong for your loved one. You may be all they’ve got and you may be looking at a long term supportive situation. Your health and welfare must be a priority.

Some of you reading this will already be in a care giving situation. You are not alone. Just know that there are others who have come before you, done what you are doing and now feel privileged to have played such an important part in another individual’s life. What a great opportunity we all have to be by the side of those in their most vulnerable state. Seeing the most loved people in my life off to their next one was immensely fulfilling for me. Sharing their last few days with them and their last breath was definitely a sacred moment. It is the best gift any of us could ever give our loved ones. Would we all not want this for ourselves?
For those involved in eldercare these sites may be helpful.

Peel Public Health
http://www.region.peel.on.ca/health/commhlth/caregiv/cgintro.htm
The Canadian Health Network Check out seniors
http://www.canadian-health-network.ca

Permission for reprint of this article is given with the inclusion of this statement:
Barb Ashcroft offers Journey to Seminars and private consultation for those who want to think more positively, discover their true passions, and feel fully alive. We seek out measurement tests that give us evidence of the status of our body functions. We look for a variety of quick treatments to fix us up so that we can get back to the daily business at hand. The WHO (World Health Organization), on the other hand, defines health as a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

How often do we take the time required to examine the state of our mental and social well being? What scale do we use to give us this data? I can check my blood pressure at the pharmacy, but so far I haven’t found a tool to give me a reading on my zest for daily life. We must become monitors of our own personal moods and emotions. We need to start paying attention to how our inner spirit is feeling. We must learn to recognize when we are becoming emotionally drained and depleted, when we are experiencing a lack of interest in the day and a sense of emptiness in our purpose. These prolonged negative states of mind and spirit can creep up on us slowly and may eventually contribute to the development of physical disease. We need to better understand the mind-body connection. We must learn how to listen to our bodies. Stress, physical ailments and depression often set in when our authentic selves are buried and sacrificed for who we think we “should” be.

We were all born into this world with our own unique gifts and into a natural state of joy. True joy comes from using these gifts for ourselves and then for the greater good of humanity. Somehow along the way, however, life happens, and we may lose touch with those gifts and our inner feelings of self worth and our spirit of hope. We need to reconnect with our original state of giftedness and contentment. The only way we can begin to do this is to become aware of our daily feelings and begin to gather some reflective data. We need to ask ourselves: How content and satisfied am I with my life? How peaceful and joyful do I feel today? When is it that I feel most confident and fulfilled? What am I doing? When does time fly? Why am I excited to greet this particular day looking forward to all its events? When do I least want to get out of bed in the morning? What’s going on that day? Pay attention to your responses. The answers lie within. It may take you a while to notice these indicators, but they are clear signs of what you need more of (or less of) in your life in order to feel complete, peaceful and valued.

Where are you on the enthusiasm scale? Are you passionate about what you do? We all start out in life with longings and interests that often get pushed aside. What was it that stirred your heart at 6, 10, and 15? Do you even remember? What were your childhood aspirations? Have they been buried so long that you can’t even recall them? Are you in touch with what really makes your heart sing? What dream do you want to start creating today? When you follow your passions, you will love your life. Your dreams already exist. They are just waiting for you to find them…to bring them into the world. This is what will keep your spirit alive and keep you mentally healthy. Your intuition knows what you really need to feel fulfilled. Your life may need some long overdue adjustments.

Sometimes we get so caught up in our same old, same old, that we lose sight of what really matters to us, what motivates us and touches our soul. Busyness and daily routine take over and then we die. Life has a way of happening with or without your consent. There are no reruns. Most people, on their death beds, do not regret their mistakes, but their lost opportunities. The good news is that it doesn’t matter what age you are. There is always time to get in touch with your passions…better late than never. If you ask yourself how many good years you think you might have to live on this planet, you get a sense of how important it is to make these years purposeful. Why would you waste one day spending your valuable time doing what is not feeding your soul? What truly gives you meaning? When you begin to align your daily life with your passions, your whole life becomes renewed and energized. Think about this: if today were your last day to live, what would not be fulfilled in you?

Even if you aren’t able to spend your whole day in your bliss, you must find some time to nourish yourself with those things about which you are passionate. Your body cries out for it. In fact, your body will rebel if you do not use your natural talents and gifts.

Your mind might be able to pretend you’re someone you’re not, but you’re body can’t. Sarah Ban Breathnach

When we really begin to seek the answers to these larger life questions, we start to live a life on fire with inner joy and passion. Our spirits get uplifted, we feel light as a feather, and our whole mental outlook improves. When we are living our passions, our physical and mental health flourish, our families benefit, and our lives become productive and rewarding.

It’s never too late to become what you might have been. What should I do?"

Some parents seem to have a hard time setting limits for their children and following through with actions for non-compliance. Children have a way of making parents feel that they are the meanest folks in town. In many instances the child ends up calling the shots while the parents worry about being too hard on her. Believe it or not, although the child may balk at parental rules, she indeed expects them, looks for them and needs them. Decide on what your behavioural expectations are; explain them clearly to your child outlining the consequences for non-compliance. The secret then is consistency and follow-through. Start at an early age to establish your message.

"I’m afraid if I set rules, my child won’t like me and I want to be his friend. Should I worry about this?"

Sometimes parents focus too much on trying to be their child’s friend. We must remember that children are just children, not adults, nor our peers. As children, they require clear and consistent behavioural guidelines. Even though they may protest, they clearly want and need direction and some consistent routines. This gives them a sense of security. All children test limits. That’s just what they do. It’s not personal. Children will accept your rules and behavioural limitations if you discipline with lots of hugs and humour. You are the parent first, and have a responsibility to set limits. In the long run, they will love and respect you more when they see you care enough about them to set limits for their own good. You just won’t see it at the moment!

On Education and Learning

"My child has a learning disability. What does that mean?"

As many as 20% of a school population may have a learning disability of one type or another. Even gifted children may have factors that interfere with their learning. Children with learning disabilities have a breakdown somewhere in their processing, storing or reporting of information. Each child’s difficulties are unique. After diagnosis, you need to make sure that the school or private psychologist explains very clearly the nature and extent of the disability and how it might impact on classroom learning. As well, you need to understand how the disability might affect daily living at home. Find out what strategies you can use at home to support your child’s learning style. The child also needs to understand his disability and learn to become his own advocate. It’s the strategies that become the key to success for the child.

"My child has no self confidence in his academic ability and is starting to give up. What do I do?"

A child’s self esteem influences his motivation and achievement. Not all children learn in the same way or at the same rate. We must always look for a child’s strengths and special gifts. Children need to know that we all have different abilities and talents. Sometimes those talents lie outside the classroom. Parents need to value the non-academic strengths just as highly as they value the 3R’s. Find your child’s strengths and keep focusing on them. Point out that not all children have his/her special gifts. We must never contribute to a child’s negative self image or he will carry that view of himself into adulthood.

"My child says he has homework, but never seems to know what to do. How can I help?"

Parents need to become familiar with the school’s homework policy. Find out how your child’s teacher assigns the homework and how the students are expected to record it. Most students need to see the homework written on a board or have a written copy with specific instructions for a particular long term project or assignment. Call the school if you are not sure of what is expected. Let your child know that you will be asking every day to see where the homework is recorded. Know the time lines for project completion. Children have a way of leaving everything to the last minute and then the whole house goes into overdrive.

Permission for reprint of this article is given with the inclusion of this statement:
Barb Ashcroft offers Journey to Seminars and private consultation for those who want to think more positively, discover their true passions, and feel fully alive. Since the movie, The Secret, was released last spring, many viewers thought that all they had to do was keep their focus on their hopes and dreams and, by some magic, those dreams would suddenly be fulfilled. There is more to it than that. We as individuals need to begin to take the first steps to bring our future hopes into reality. The Universe helps those who help themselves.

It is when we keep our focus on our dream and begin to move our decisions and choices in favour of our passions that suddenly we find that those special resources and contacts that we need seem to begin to appear. Taking the first step is the most difficult one. It requires letting go, reaching out and taking risks.

So what stops us from taking these risks? Fear of failure and rejection, our need for certainty and a lack of belief in ourselves will often prevent us from going after “what truly makes our heart sing.”

In his book Risking, David Viscott provides us with his insights.
· Taking a risk is central to everything worthwhile in life.
· A life lived trying to be secure and free of risks eventually becomes
prison.
· Success falls more to the courageous than to those who understand and
plan everything, but can’t act.
· Don’t sit back waiting for the perfect moment. It almost never comes.
· Any risk that is important for growth will continually reappear until it is
settled.

Bill Treasurer reminds us in Right Risk that “to live is to risk. Risk taking is as essential to life as breathing…when we don’t take risks we get stuck in a rut of safety.”

Think about this:
“People who don’t take risks generally make about two big mistakes a year.
People who do take risks generally make about two big mistakes a year.”
                                                                                                                                                                                         Peter F. Drucker

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, BEGIN IT!
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it" Goethe

Permission for reprint of this article is given with the inclusion of this statement:
Barb Ashcroft offers Journey to Seminars and private consultation. The first few days bring excitement and joy as the children love their new freedom. It won’t take long though until you hear the “B” word, “I’m bored.”

It is wise to keep a few challenging, but fun, educational activities on hand for these times. With just one hour a day of incidental reading, writing, discussion and math activities, your child will keep up his basic skills and increase his general knowledge. Learning is a lifelong ongoing process and is certainly not limited to just the school setting. There are many ways to keep your child’s mind active during the summer.

Math websites offer basic skills practice and an assortment of games.

Crossword puzzle books or online word puzzles sharpen vocabulary and assist with spelling.

Short daily story writing or reporting and editing on the computer will keep up their written expression fluency and accuracy.

Current events from daily newscasts or newspapers offer great opportunities for a family discussion of social issues and values. They also provide an opportunity for incidental geography learning.

Keep short stories or articles pertaining to your child’s hobbies and interests on hand. This will keep up her reading skills. Let her tell you what new information she has discovered.

Family outings and summer trips provide occasions to learn about new surroundings and local history. Encourage your child to become a keen observer and to ask probing questions as you travel to new and different locations. Traveling to new places can be one of the best learning experiences for a child.

Nature walks, museum and science centre visits all stimulate inquiring minds. It’s the “Why” questions that show interest and lead to further research.

Post an interesting daily research question on the fridge. Help your children sharpen their research skills. They need help refining their key search words.

All of these activities can be done informally and incidentally as your family goes about enjoying the summer break. Learning is natural and can be fun when the whole family gets involved.

When children know you are enthusiastic about a topic, they will pick up that interest. Keep them challenged, curious, and motivated. The “B” word might just disappear.

Some educational and fun sites for kids:
http://www.math.com/
http://www.coolmath.com/
www.kidzone.ws/math/index.htm
http://www.askforkids.com/
www.cbc.ca/kids
http://school.discovery.com/students
http://www.funology.com/
http://www.kidsclick.org/
www.pbskids.org/findit/
www.sikids.com/

Journey to Joy for Parents
http://www.barbashcroft.com/

Permission for reprint of this article is given with the inclusion of this statement:
Barb Ashcroft offers Journey to Seminars and private consultation for those who want to think more positively, discover their true passions, and feel fully alive. They are bombarded with thousands of visual images flashing simultaneously in front of their eyes. From cartoons to action films and video and computer games they receive ongoing rapid visual and audio stimuli. With the remote control they quickly learn to channel surf, watch two shows at once, and tune out. Extremely loud music from headsets and speakers pierces their eardrums. Advertisers entice them with bigger and better gadgets and toys. They are surrounded with overwhelming choices and distractions at a young age. Family life has become hectic and over-scheduled. We may not be able to completely alter their environment, but we can become aware of its effect on our children and set up some strategies to offset all this over-stimulation.

The Effect on our Children

Many children have a hard time settling down, focusing and listening when they have been over-stimulated by so much sensory input.

Their ability to focus and concentrate on a quiet demanding task has decreased.

Children have become used to being entertained externally by this type of stimuli and have lost touch with using their own imaginations. They are always expecting action-packed entertainment and thrills. Heard the word “bored” lately?

Listening skills have almost become a lost art.

Getting to sleep has become more difficult.

Our children are beginning to expect everything in life to be “instant”; consequently, they have little patience.

Hearing impairments are becoming more prevalent.

What Can We Do?

Make sure your children have some daily quiet calm-down time. (reading a favourite book, listening to an audio book, working quietly on a hands-on hobby, watching an inspirational movie, having individual special talk times with Mom or Dad, even short meditation to reflective music.)

Encourage imaginative play, creative hobbies and reading.

Let them know that you also have to take quiet breaks.

Share with them how you focus on long boring tasks and follow through.

Monitor the amount of time they are involved in over-stimulating activities.

Develop listening skills through the use of listening games. (75% of their classroom day requires listening)

Play some soft, quiet, reflective background music.

Create predictable consistent structures and routines that keep your child emotionally safe and secure.

Limit their choices and see that those choices are age-appropriate.

Make sure that your child is getting enough sleep to be able to listen and focus at school the next day.

Try to keep your own voice calm and soft even while you discipline.

Turn down the speaker volume. Protect their ear drums.

Schedule family down time and guard it with your life.

Slow down, pause and breathe!!!

Barclay

Four out of five people are not passionate about what they are doing in life. Is your life fulfilling? Are you passionate about what you do? Do you feel that you live a purposeful life? Are you in touch with what really makes your heart sing? What dream do you want to start creating today? When you follow your passions, you will love your life. Your dreams already exist. They are just waiting for you to find them…to bring them into the world.

If today were your last day to live, what would not be fulfilled in you?

If you think that you can’t identify your passions and gifts, think back to your early years. What were your hobbies and interests? What do others usually compliment you on? What talents do others recognize in you? What feedback does the universe give you? What are you doing when time seems to fly by? When do you feel light as a feather, content and at peace? The answers to these questions will tell you what is close to your heart. This, then, is what you need to go after.

Even if you aren’t able to spend your whole day in your bliss, you must find time to nourish yourself with those things about which you are passionate. Your body cries out for it. In fact your body will rebel if you do not use your natural talents and gifts.

Stress, physical ailments and depression often set in when our authentic selves are buried for the sake of security.

If you are struggling to identify your true passions, The Passion TestTM is an incredibly valuable tool for clarifying what’s really important to you in your life. It provides you with a systematic way to identify those things that truly bring you joy. The test is very personal and will provide wonderful insights for any age. Begin to feel excited and motivated about your purpose. Greet each day with energy and enthusiasm. Get in touch with your true destiny.
Join a Passion TestTM Seminar or take the two-session private program. You will be amazed at how clear your life focus will become. When you discover your true passions, focus on your special gifts, and add your uniqueness to the lives of others, your life will be enriched.

“When you are clear, what you want will show up in your life,
but, only to the extent you are clear.”
Janet Attwood

The Passion Test is a trademark of Enlightened Alliances created by Janet and Chris Attwood.
Barb Ashcroft is a certified Passion Test facilitator.

Journey to Joy
http://www.barbashcroft.com/

Permission for reprint of this article is given with the inclusion of this statement:
Barb Ashcroft offers Journey to Seminars and private consultation for those who want to think more positively, discover their true passions, and feel fully alive. Finally get to play again, dress up, get down on the floor for games (on my good days), giggle, tell knock knock jokes, take in a Disney movie and then send them home! Can’t get much better than this. Grandkids light up your life. They bring out the kid in you, think you’re cool, love you unconditionally, and don’t mind listening to your stories over and over again. They brighten your day when you’re feeling down. They even “cheer” when you drop in. They make great welcoming committees.

According to the Vanier Institute of the Family, older Canadians (76% of those 65 and older) have grandchildren, and most have more than one. Today’s grandparents live longer and experience a longer duration of grandparenthood than ever before. Many grandparents live into their grandchildren’s adulthood. Grandparenting is another opportunity for us to connect, build relationships and make a difference in the lives of others.

Grandparents can be a wonderful influence in the lives of their grandchildren. We may provide additional adult role models for them, act as resources for information, give practical advice based on true life experiences, provide them with a sense of family history and continuity and become their confidants. We can also tell them some pretty hilarious historical tales about their own parents which they love to hear.

A grandparent may be a great emotional support to a grandchild. With our lives now hopefully less hurried, we are able to offer quality listening time to the growing child, and provide ongoing encouragement and assistance with their schoolwork, their social issues and their insecurities. Grandparents make great cheerleaders. They can foster the child’s positive qualities, and show a little more patience with them, since they don’t have to spend their whole day with them. Even grandparents who do not live in close proximity to their grandchildren may keep up a close relationship through a continual communication exchange. It’s the constant interest and support shown that counts. If we establish positive relationships with our grandchildren in their early years, and keep the open communication going, this bond may continue into the teenage years when a third party ear and respected voice may be very helpful as the adolescents begin to assert their independence. These same teenagers can also keep us up to date with new trends and changing cultural ways.

Becoming a grandparent involves a great deal of personal growth. Grandparents can sometimes get themselves into trouble with the parents. There really is no manual for grandparenting. When your first grandchild is born, you just want to get your hands on that beautiful baby. You forget that this little one is not yours. This can be especially difficult for grandmothers. One really never stops being a mother. It can be quite a confusing time trying to figure out your new role. New mothers need support, but may be very sensitive to any suggestions that grandmothers make as they may perceive the suggestions as criticism. Parenting practices and styles, as well, change over the years and the generations may view child rearing quite differently. Most grandparents want to help, but often may be confused as to how to do this without potential conflict. The Vanier Institute notes that “the grandparent role is characterized by complexity. In a sense it is more complex than being a parent because it involves more people (adult children and children-in-law, as well as another set of grandparents).” It appears that there really is no clear description for the role of a grandparent and that most “individuals negotiate roles within a wide range of possibilities.” (J. Rosenthal & J. Gladstone, 2000)

The best role for grandparents to play is one of support, both for their adult children who are now parents and also for the new grandchildren. It takes time to adjust to the new role and to work out how that support can best be provided to meet the needs of everyone. Let the parents know you are there and then wait to be asked. Some grandparents today may find themselves in a primary caretaking role for their grandchildren. Most grandparents, however, don’t seek out this role, but agree to provide this level of support out of some financial difficulties being experienced by the parents.

Grandparents can be an inspiration to their grandchildren. When my own grandmother was on her deathbed, I remember telling her that I wanted to be just like her some day. She had a very independent spirit, great drive, and always found a way to overcome life’s hurdles. Her photo is a constant daily reminder to me of that strength and attitude that I so often have to call on. My own children valued the time they spent with their grandparents. They often speak about Grandpa’s laugh, his gentle spirit and his woodworking toy projects. My son became very close to my Mom when she was in her wheelchair for nine years, as he lifted and toted her around in his car. My daughter use to keep her paternal grandmother company on many occasions when she was alone. It is this contact with older grandparents that also provides the younger generation with a sense of respect for the aging process.

Grandchildren give us a sense of immortality as we think of our personal and family line being continued through them. This is a comforting thought as we begin to think about what legacy we will leave to the world. In the meantime, grab as many hugs and cuddles as you can get and don’t miss this great opportunity to get silly, play like a kid again, go to the park, eat ice cream, swing on the swings and then send them home to their parents! Enjoy a soothing cup of tea, in your own peaceful and quiet space, smile and be thankful for the wonderful gift of your grandkids.

Journey to Joy
http://www.barbashcroft.com/

Permission for reprint of this article is given with the inclusion of this statement:
Barb Ashcroft offers Journey to Seminars and private consultation for those who want to think more positively, discover their true passions, and feel fully alive. We all start out in life with longings and interests that often get pushed aside for what we call "life". What was it that stirred your heart at 6, 10, and 15? Do you even remember? What were your childhood aspirations? Have they been buried so long that you can't even recall them?
In her book, Something More, Sarah Ban Breathnach encourages us to become our authentic selves. She points out that our lives at this moment are a direct result of choices we made once upon a time. "Conscious choice is creative, the heart of authenticity-unconscious choice is how we end up living other people's lives."
Sometimes we make choices based upon what we think we should be doing, what our parents wanted us to become, what society has encouraged us to pursue, what we feel we need to do to gain prestige, power and status, and of course we chase after the best job that will afford us the luxuries of our consumer-oriented materialistic culture.

But have you ever asked yourself what truly brings you joy? Something more is needed to fill our spiritual hunger. We often feel that something crucial is missing, but can't figure out what it is. What is it that will fill this sense of emptiness? Sarah suggests we ask ourselves, "If I died tonight, what would I regret not having done today? If we are to lead deep, rich, fulfilling lives that are anchored in what's important, what's precious, what's real, so that our souls can soar, passion must fuel our flight."

Are you settling for a passive, rather than a passionate life? We often lose ourselves little by little, day by day settling for "something else" instead of Something More. Sarah reminds us that, "each one of us has enough power embedded in our being to set the world on fire." Many of us have that "someday" syndrome. Someday I'll write a book. Someday I'll start my own business. Someday I'll take up piano. Elizabeth Kubler Ross points out, "when you live as if you'll live forever, it becomes too easy to postpone the things you know you must do."
Someday comes sooner than later.
The Passion Test will help you identify your "someday" projects. You will get a real sense of what you personally value and hope to accomplish in this life-even it seems out of the question.

"It's a funny thing about life. If you refuse to settle for anything less than the best, that's what it will give you."

W. Somerset Maugham

The Passion Test TM is a trademark of Enlightened Alliances created by Janet and Chris Attwood.

Permission for reprint of this article is given with the inclusion of this statement:
Barb Ashcroft offers Journey to Seminars and private consultation for those who want to think more positively, discover their true passions, and feel fully alive. Colgrove states that, “Joy is the Feeling of Grinning on the Inside.” Do you have that feeling? It’s the most pleasing and comforting feeling in the world. It’s peace. It’s excitement. It’s contentment. It’s hopeful and it’s always present. When you wake up in the morning, is this how you feel? Pay attention to those first morning thoughts; they are very revealing. They will tell you if you are experiencing joy in your life. Are you excited to greet the day? Do you look forward to all of its opportunities and experiences? Are you wondering where you will get the time to complete all your interesting projects and connect with your dearest friends? Or, do you view the day as another long, boring, heavy, unfulfilling burden? Listen carefully to those early rising thoughts; they tell us so much about our current state of mind.

Many people are living their lives in a dull, monotonous, and joyless zone. They find their days long and empty; they feel their lives are without purpose and their only conversation is about the past. They are consumed by life’s hurts and hold on to their deep seated resentments and anger. They have no passion for the day or hope for the future.

So where do you see yourself in this scenario? Would you like to greet the day with energy and enthusiasm? Would you like that quiet sense of inner satisfaction and peace at the end of the day? Would you like to experience more joy in your life?

If we look at how these optimistic and happy folks do it, we may be surprised to find out that their joyful spirit comes from within. It is mostly a matter of attitude and a particular way of looking at all of life’s experiences that makes the great difference.

Joyful people love and respect themselves. They delight in simply being who they are right now. They feel worthy of all the good things that life has to offer. They know that we are all born with a full cup of joy and with a sense of self love. They rise above all the external attacks on their self esteem and hold on tightly to their authentic selves.

Joyful people let go of the past. They free themselves from pent-up resentment, pain, anger and guilt. They forgive themselves and others. They know that holding on to anger and dwelling on past hurts only holds them back and prevents them from moving on. They allow themselves a grieving period and get on with life. They know that all that happens to them is part of life’s journey and they look forward to newer and more pleasant experiences.

Joyful people keep their thoughts positive. When they find their minds drifting into negative thinking, they pay attention to their uncomfortable emotional response and put a fast stop to these thoughts. They view all of life’s miserable moments as lessons to be learned and are constantly asking themselves, “What did I learn from this?” They know there is often very little one can do about a tragic or negative life happening, but they realize they have a choice when it comes to how they respond to each event. They make a conscious decision to learn the lesson and move forward.

Joyful people discover their true passions in life and find ways to live them out. They know what inspires them and what makes their hearts sing. They recognize the feeling of elation that springs forth when they are all-consumed in an activity where they are using their special gifts. They know instinctively that they need to do more of this and they find a way to let their unique talents shine.

Joyful people are risk takers and are not afraid of failure. They move out of their comfort zones, get excited and get going. They acknowledge their fears, reach out for support, take a deep breath and embark on the first step to a new venture. They know that staying stuck in the past will not bring fulfillment. They are very aware that life is short and they want to make sure that they take hold of all opportunities sent their way.

Joyful people believe in a Power greater than themselves. They trust and have faith in this Power to guide and support them through unexpected crises. They know they do not walk alone. They take time for quiet reflection and listen closely to this inner source of Power. Their faith brings them peace and tranquility. They express gratitude every day for all their blessings. They always see their cup half full.

Finally, joyful people do not look externally for anyone or anything to bring them happiness. They do this for themselves. When was the last time someone knocked at your door to bring you a box of joy? How long will you keep waiting for this delivery? Only you have the power to make your life more joyful. It’s right there waiting for you. Look within…it’s an inside job.

Journey to Joy

http://www.barbashcroft.com/

Permission for reprint of this article is given with the inclusion of this statement:
Barb Ashcroft offers Journey to Seminars and private consultation for those who want to think more positively, discover their true passions, and feel fully alive.
